Superata questa soglia, succede spesso che, per intervenuti cambiamenti esterni e pi\u00f9 ancora per logoramento interno o all\u2019opposto marcato autocompiacimento e desiderio di (stra)fare e uscire dalla propria nicchia ben coltivata, non si riesca a proseguire con efficacia lungo i binari fin l\u00ec seguiti: qualcosa si spegne, qualcosa muore, qualcos\u2019altro subentra. E prima di ritrovare il bandolo della matassa e tornare grosso modo a brillare, se mai se ne \u00e8 capaci, deve passare del tempo e soprattutto occorre uno scarto, un salto, una vera discontinuit\u00e0. So what happened? Television, mostly, which siphoned away readers and ad dollars, turned celebrity culture into a growth industry, and assured the end of <\/em>Life<em>, the <\/em>Saturday Evening Post<em>, and<\/em> Collier\u2019s<em> \u2013 magazines that had published Mailer, Didion, Hersey, and many others. <\/em>Esquire<em>, <\/em>New York<em>, and <\/em>Rolling Stones<em> were no longer must-reads for an engaged readership that couldn\u2019t wait for the next issue to arrive in their mailboxes, eager to find out what Wolfe, Talese, Thompson, and the rest had in store for them. As the seventies drew to a close, so, too, did the last golden era of American journalism.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But there was also a sense of psychic exhaustion \u2013 that the great stories had all been told and there was nothing left to write about.
